What is an FTP Client and How to Use Filezilla

An FTP Client is software that is designed to transfer files back-and-forth between two computers over the Internet. It needs to be installed on your computer and can only be used with a live connection to the Internet.

The classic FTP Client look is a two-pane design. The pane on the left displays the files on your computer and the pane on the right displays the files on the remote computer.

Instructions for Setting Up Filezilla

Step 1: Download Filezilla

First, install Filezilla if you have not already done so.

• You can download this free software by Clicking Here.

Step 2: Enter General Settings

After installation of Filezilla, browse to File > Site Manager.

The 3 screen shots below represent 3 of the 4 tabs in Site Manager page view. The 4th tab is not needed.

• On the General Tab, complete the following as shown:
  • Host Name = ftp.channeladvisor.com (for ShoppingAdvisor feeds the host name will be partner.channeladvisor.com)
  • User = ChannelAdvisor FTP Login Prefix:User name
    • Your Login Prefix is entered in MarketplaceAdvisor Premium under Settings-> Image Hosting. If you have not already created a login prefix under Settings-> Image Hosting you can make it anything you want but there is a 6 character maximum. Once you enter this login prefix just click Save Changes at the bottom of the page.
    • Example: If you create your login prefix as "testca" then your FTP user would be testca:stacey@channeladvisor.com
  • Password = Your MarketplaceAdvisor Premium password.
    

• On the Advanced Tab, enter a forward slash "/" (circled in red).

• On the Transfer Settings Tab, select Active mode (circled in red).

Step 3: Drag and Drop Images

When using the tool, drill down to where you have your images until you get to the raw images. (Again note: Don't forget to NOT create directories. Put everything in the root.)

• Highlight the files on the left side and drag to the right side (remote site).

Step 4: Upload the Images into MarkertplaceAdvisor Premium

Once you have the images loaded to the remote site, the system will pick them up and load them into your image library. If you do not want to wait for the scheduled process to start, you can start the process immediately by following the below instructions.

• From MarketplaceAdvisor Premium, select Tools-> Images
• Click "Bulk Upload My Images Using FTP".

This will start uploading your images in the software under Tools-> Images and you are done! Now you can start using the filename only when assigning your images to inventory items - ex: image.jpg instead of a full URL. It is that fast and easy!
