Overstock - How It Works

Overstock Setup Process

  • Merchant applies and signs partnership agreement
  • Defines role of "Fulfillment Partner" with strict rules. Overstock Shopping owns the customer, no marketing allowed
  • Partner proposes products to Overstock's Category Buyer
  • Complete standard Partner Offer Spreadsheet with products that may be a good fit for Overstock and that are aggressively priced
  • Negotiation occurs via spreadsheet (Overstock makes counter offer)
  • "Cost" includes both revenue for product and basic shipping
  • Merchant submits approved SKUs to Overstock
  • Overstock vets products to ensure consistency and good buying experience (product description, images, etc.)
  • Product is launched on main site (3-7 business days)
Buyer Communications
  • Overstock manages the entire buyer-facing sale process
  • Overstock Shopping checkout (confirms order, payment and shipping)
  • Buyer interacts with Overstock Shopping on product, returns and other inquiries
  • New orders are communicated to the merchant
  • Basic fulfillment data (buyer's name & shipping address)
    • Overstock owns the customer - no branding on boxes or packing slips
    • No email, phone number, billing address or payment information
  • Products must be shipped and tracking information provided to within 48 hours
  • "No Questions Asked" buyer care
  • Overstock closely measures customer satisfaction
  • Comprehensive returns policy (product back to Overstock if it can be resold or to merchant for repair, exchange or refund)
