Facebook Engine Optimization 101

A Like button allows a shopper to tell their Facebook friends that they like a product on your site and provide a link to it. When the shopper clicks the Like button on your product page or website, an update appears in their profile (and sometimes in their friends’ news feed) with a link back to your product or website.  Recommendations from someone you know typically carry more weight than great reviews or search results.  More importantly, it’s another method for publicizing your products and brand without requiring on-going work or payments.  The Like button can lead to a direct increase in sales for a single product, sales for other products and increased brand recognition.

Tasks to Complete

Complete the following steps related to this task:

Create a Facebook Page

The first step in a Facebook strategy is one that most retailers have already taken: create a Facebook page for your business.  It’s free and Facebookers can sign-up to receive any updates that you post. Many retailers run successful campaigns through Facebook posts.  If you have not yet created your Facebook page, it’s time to add one and link to it from your site.

Adding a Facebook "Like" Button to Your Premium Webstore Product Pages

The next step is to add a Facebook “Like” button to your store’s product pages by following these steps:Facebook offers two ways to add the Like button to your product page.

  1. Add the code below to your product’s Display Format XmlPackage.  (Contact your designer if you are not familiar with editing your site’s skin or Product XmlPackage).
  2. Edit the code below, replacing www.mysite.com with your store’s URL. Note that you should NOT include a forward slash (“/”) or a space after the URL. For example, if your URL was www.google.com, the code should be http://www.facebook.com/plugins/like.php?href=www.google.com(!INVOCATION!)
  3. In your Product XmlPackage, add the code where you would like the Facebook like button to appear. Note that this will vary based on your design .
<iframe id="facebookframe" src="http://www.facebook.com/plugins/like.php?href=www.mysite.com(!INVOCATION!)&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=false&amp;width=450&amp;action=like&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" style="border:none; overflow:hidden; width:450px; height:80px;" allowTransparency="true"></iframe>
