How To

Avoiding Duplicate Listings at eBay

The eBay Duplicate Listing Policy prohibits submitting multiple listings of the same item in the same listing format with certain limited exceptions.  In general, sellers should not be submitting the same item multiple times, so the Duplicate Listing Processing block was added to help prevent inadvertent submission of the same inventory item in the same listing format multiple times.  For users that would like duplicate listings blocked, enabling the option will stop any listing of an item that is already submitted as live to eBay.

The Duplicate Listing Policy for fixed price listings was added to the eBay US site in late October 2010 and a separate policy for auction listingswas added in May of 2011.  It has since expanded to multiple other countries and should be considered when creating an eBay listing strategy.  Historically sellers had been encouraged to list inventory multiple times with different titles to be found in the eBay search results.  With the Duplicate Listing Policy, sellers are generally only allowed to list their item a single time.  To assist with exposure in search results, sellers should implement the following features as appropriate for their listings:

  • Variation Style Listings - Multiple items in the same listing where the buyer can select the appropriate size, color, or other option for their need
  • Fitment/Parts Compatibility Listings - An option on the US Motors site where vehicles for the part can be specified
  • eBay Catalog Mapping - Associating the listing with an item in the eBay Catalog for further information and details and better placement in search results

How to Enable the Duplicate Listing Processing Option

Complete the following steps related to his task:

  1. Navigate to your Marketplaces > eBay > Settings > eBay Settings view
  2. Select the edit link next to listings to configure the settings listed below.
  3. Under the Duplicate Listing Processing section select the checkbox and click the Save button.

When enabled, the Duplicate Listing Processing option will block any listing from going live in a new listing if the SKU is already live at eBay in a listing of the same type.  (Existing open listings are not affected and no open listings will be withdrawn.)  This means that you can have an auction and a fixed price listing of the same SKU, but not two auctions or two fixed price listings of that SKU.  When a second listing is submitted and a duplicate situation is detected, an error will be logged in the Errored Listings view of:

Duplicate listing submission blocked based on configured settings. This item is already live in listing XXXXXXXXXX. To change the setting and allow duplicates, go to Marketplaces > eBay > Settings > eBay Settings > Listings.

The item detected as already live is specified so that you can clearly see the existing open listing.  If you would like to premit duplicates to be submitted, disable the setting and resubmit the listing.  Please note that duplicate listings are only permitted in limited circumstances and that you should clearly understand the eBay policy before submitting duplicate listings.
