Creating Parent SKUs

Creating a Parent Item is the second step in the process of configuring your inventory to list in a variation format. To get a full overview of this process please see the Using Variations page. A parent SKU is not an actual product in your inventory. A Parent SKU serves as a place holder for the product variation you have created and the child SKUs which serve as your actual inventory. In addition to completing this task via the User Interface, you may also complete this task in bulk by configuring your inventory for variations via spreadsheet.

Tasks to Complete


Complete the following steps related to this task:

  1. Navigate to your Inventory > Products > All Products view 
  2. Select the 'Create New' button and then 'Variation Parent Item' from the dropdown
  3. Because this item is not an actual sellable product, only the following fields are neccessary to complete:
    • Item Title - Make your title generic and avoid referencing any of your varying attributes
    • SKU - Use the word "Parent" in your SKU name (This helps with organization)
    • Description - Make your description generic and avoid referencing any of your varying attributes.
    • Under Variation Information select the 'Variation Relationship' that you created.
    • Classification - If using classifications with your children SKUs be sure to select the same classification
    • Images - Although it is not required, it is highly recommended to assign an image to your parent SKU
