How To

Implementing Markdown Manager for eBay Listings

eBay's Markdown Manager functionality allows items to be promoted with a discount or sale price for a limited period of time. This can entice buyers to make purchases based on the discounted price and increase sales velocity. The Markdown Manager functionality is available for most Fixed Price items at eBay and can be used with different rules and time windows for the sale pricing. When sales transactions are processed into your account, the discounted sale price will automatically be used for the buyer's purchase.

Markdown Manager cannot currently be implemented directly through ChannelAdvisor. You will need to setup Markdown Manager from within your eBay Seller account, and the instructions below highlight the steps it takes to do so. There is nothing you need to setup in ChannelAdvisor for Markdown Manager, but there are some important things to keep in mind with regard to how the sale of Markdown Manager items appear in ChannelAdvisor, which can be reviewed here: https://ssc.ChannelAdvisor.com/support/faqs/does-ChannelAdvisor-support-ebay-markdown-manager-0

Proceed with caution: Any revision to a listing will remove that product from the Markdown Manager sale. ChannelAdvisor revises price and quantity every 15 minutes or so, meaning there is a high risk that products could be removed from the sale. You could use the exclusion label to exclude products from being revised (and thus include them in the Markdown Manager sale), but then it would be very difficult to manage quantity closely.

Tasks to Complete

To implement the Markdown manager you will need to make a configuration directly within your eBay Seller account by following the steps below. For additional details on these steps see this eBay article:

  1. Verify that you meet the requirements to use the Markdown Manager
  2. Log into your eBay seller account
  3. Click My eBay at the top of most eBay pages.
  4. Place your pointer over the  Account  tab, and then select Marketing Tools.
  5. Click the Markdown Manager link on the left side of the page.
  6. Click the Create Sale button.
  7. Once a sale is created, you'll receive a success message. If you schedule more than 200 listings in your sale, you'll receive an email to let you know when your sale is created.

Sellers with an eBay Store subscription are allowed to create sales and the number of items that can be included in the sale is based on the eBay Store subscription level. Sales are created at eBay and are applied to product listings for a specific time window. They can be started immediately or scheduled to begin at some point in the future. While an item is on sale, the discount pricing information will be displayed in the eBay search results and on the individual product page. When a buyer purchases an item that is on sale, the sale price will be used for the transaction. It will not be recorded as the original price with a sale discount as the detail pricing information is not provided.

Markdown Manager Requirements

  • Revising the item price, shipping cost, or both for an item in the Revise My Item page removes the item from a sale.
  • Most sales are processed within an hour.
  • Items can be discounted 5% to 99%
  • There are minimum and maximum duration lengths for price sales. A fixed price sale can be 1 to 45 days. The minimum duration between sales is 1 day.
  • If a listing is already on sale, you won't be able to add a new sale. For example, if your listing is on a price sale, you won't be able to add a free shipping sale to that listing.

For a complete set of rules and requirements for sales, please see the eBay details for putting items on sale .

In the UK , listings must use the Good-Til-Canceled duration and follow additional rules based on UK retail regulations. Listings that have not been open for a sufficient duration of time or are not GTC listings will not be allowed for a Markdown Manager promotion.

Alternatives to Markdown Manager

If the Markdown Manager is not allowed for your products, you can also use the Revise Item functionality to update pricing on the products. (Note that eBay will remove the item from a Markdown Manager sale if any revise is applied to the listing during the sale, so if you want to revise your items this is a better overall solution.) While they will not show the Markdown Manager sale price icons in the search results and on the individual eBay item page, the lower price will promote your item to generate more purchases and thus qualify for a better positioning in the Best Match search results. If available to you and in your category, you can also use the strikethrough pricing option to show the original price of the item and the amount that it has been discounted.

eBay's Sales Maximizer may be a viable alternative to Markdown Manager, which does not work with ChannelAdvisor's revise function. Sales Maximizer can be used in conjunction with items posted from ChannelAdvisor, but there is currently no direct integration between ChannelAdvisor and Sales Maximizer. No changes are needed to the way you post items from ChannelAdvisor, but all Sales Maximizer-related information such as bundle relationships and order-level discount information must be configured directly at eBay. All orders will be imported into ChannelAdvisor as usual, but with the discounted rates.
