How To

Implementing a Shipping Surcharge Rate Table for eBay Listings

eBay allows a rate table to be configured to calculate special surcharge rates to areas that have higher than average shipping costs, such as Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and APO/FPO destinations in the US and other outlying destinations in other countries.

Please Note: The Surcharge Rate Table can only be used with flat rate shipping options and is not available in every country.

The following topics should be reviewed before completing this task.

Tasks to Complete

Follow the steps below to configure the Shipping Surcharge Rate Table for eBay listings:

  1. Login to your eBay account and configure the rate table at eBay
  2. Within your ChannelAdvisor template select the Use Domestic Shipping Surcharge Table configured at eBay checkbox on the posting template.

Considerations

Here are a few things to consider when implementing the Shipping Surcharge Rate Table:

  • This option is only available for flat rate shipping options and can either apply a surcharge to the current rate or a replacement rate for those options.
  • If selecting the domestic shipping surcharge option, a weight field will appear to configure the weight of the item for the shipping surcharge calculations. (If using other rate calculations on the eBay Shipping Surcharge Table that are not weight-based, the weight value is not necessary.)
  • When items are listed using the Domestic Shipping Table option, the rate information configured at eBay will be used to calculate an appropriate shipping rate for the buyers in those locales.  This allows you to properly address the shipping rates for destinations that may have more complex or expensive shipping requirements and charge an appropriate rate to each of your buyers. The buyers will automatically see the appropriate rate based on their destination address information.
  • To avoid errors when listing items, please make sure that any class (Economy, Standard, Expedited, One-day) used at eBay in the shipping table is also configured as one of your posting template domestic shipping options. If you have a mismatch in these values (trying to surcharge an Economy rate where no Economy rate is submitted for your item), you may get an error like:
eBay responded with the message:
Code: 219214
Short Message: Shipping Surcharge fee is not applicable
Long Message: Shipping Surcharge fee is not applicable for this shipping service.

To resolve this error, look at the shipping table configured at eBay. If you are using Economy rates, make sure at least one option from the Economy Services list (such as Media Mail, Parcel Post, etc.) is selected and submitted with your listings. Even if you are using the replacement pricing model instead of the surcharge model, this is required to post your items.
