How To

Each inventory upload file that is sent to ChannelAdvisor contains data using field names, called Headers, that define the information contained in each field. An upload file may contain headers that are not recognized by the ChannelAdvisor system. In order to use a template you must first define the header fields that are contained in your upload file.

Tasks to Complete

Select one of the following methods to upload header values into ChannelAdvisor.

Please note:

  • Header values can not start with a number or special character (such as underscores, slashes, or asterisks).
  • In order to avoid issues with special characters when uploading inventory data into ChannelAdvisor, we recommend the file be encoded in UTF-8 before upload. This is easily accomplished by saving the file and selecting the option to save as UTF-8.

Upload Header Values Manually

Via the ChannelAdvisor User Interface you have the option to add each header value manually one-by-one. Complete the steps below to complete this task:

  1. Navigate to your Inventory > Product Mapping > Define File Headers View.
  2. Click the Add Headers button.
  3. Type the header name in the box that appears.
  4. Click Add to save the new header to the list.
  5. Repeat this process for each header value.
  6. Map your template .

Upload Header Values in Bulk

If your upload file contains many columns of header data, it may be easier to upload a sample file rather than creating your headers list one-by-one. After you have uploaded a sample file, you can begin mapping the headers to ChannelAdvisor inventory fields in the Template.

  1. Navigate to your Inventory > Product Mapping > Define File Headers View.
  2. Click the Upload Headers button.
  3. Click the Browse button to locate the sample headers file on your computer.
  4. Click Upload to process the sample header file and add the field names to the list.
  5. Map your template .

Support for Headerless Upload Files

If you are working with suppliers that do not support sending inventory updates in the proper file/header format, you can take advantage of our Headerless Upload File feature. Our platform can now successfully upload inventory files without column headers.

Here's how you can take advantage of this feature:

  1. Navigate to Inventory > Settings > Inventory Settings.
  2. Enter the URL location and select the check box to Enable Support for Headerless Upload Files.
  3. Paste the established header values in the entry field.
  4. Ensure the values are separated using the same delimiter as the selected file type (tab, comma, or pipe).
  5. Select the correct template from the Apply Template drop-down menu.

Please note: If the upload template changes (headers need to be added or deleted), you will need to edit the configuration and update the headerless upload details.
