How To

Manually Specifying Vehicles for eBay's Parts Compatibility – US/CA Specifications

The manual specification method allows you to define the specific vehicles supported by the listed automotive part. Specification rules vary by the different locales. This page discusses the US and CA (Canada) specifications. To view alternative locale specifications see below.

For this information, eBay is using AAIA-compliant (ACES) definitions of the vehicles. If you know that your items will not be part of the catalog and will have to be listed in this format, it will be to your advantage to research this information and determine how to collect the various vehicle details for each of your items. You can download the official list of supported vehicles (now available directly from eBay, updated by them quarterly) to ensure that your submissions will be successful.

Tasks to Complete

If an item is not found in the catalog of parts available from eBay and the specifications do not describe the part in sufficient detail, then the last option is to individually list each of the year, make, model, and potentially other characteristics for the vehicles supported by the part. Each possible vehicle option needs to be detailed to ensure that comprehensive options are provided to prospective shoppers.

Detailed Format

To configure manual parts compatibility, your information will need to be in the following format:

Car and Truck Parts:
YEAR | MAKE | MODEL | TRIM | ENGINE::NOTES
YEAR | MAKE | MODEL | TRIM | ENGINE::NOTES

Motorcycle and Motorsports Parts:
YEAR | MAKE | MODEL | Sub-Model::NOTES
YEAR | MAKE | MODEL | Sub-Model::NOTES

Boat Parts:
MAKE | ENGINE TYPE | YEAR | ENGINE | MODEL | COMPONENT::Notes

  • Year, Make and Model (for Car & Truck Parts and Motorcycle & Motorsports Parts) and Engine Type (for Boat Parts) are required fields.
  • Trim, Engine, Sub-Model, Component, Model (for Boat Parts) and Notes fields are optional and should only be used when necessary .
  • The pipe is used as a separator between the vehicle information.
  • The double colon (::) marks any notes that should be included.
  • Line breaks indicate a different vehicle.

Please note:  If intending to export fitment information, you may need to separate each vehicle using ^^ instead of line breaks.

Example 1:
1999|Jeep|Cherokee
2000|Jeep|Cherokee
2001|Jeep|Cherokee
2002|Jeep|Cherokee::Special Note about 2002 model year
2003|Jeep|Cherokee

Example 2: A more complex option, specifying certain information about some 2003 and 2004 Subaru vehicles, could have this format:
2004|Subaru|Impreza|WRX STI Sedan 4-Door|2.5L 2458CC H4 GAS DOHC Turbocharged
2004|Subaru|Impreza|WRX Sedan 4-Door::All Engines are supported.
2004|Subaru|Forester
2003|Subaru|Forester|XS Wagon 4-Door::All 2.5L Engines are supported.

Example 3: Date ranges are supported for the year option, allowing the first example to be replaced with any of the following formats.  Using four digit years as the starting and the ending dates
1999-2003|Jeep|Cherokee

Example 4: Four digit year for the starting date and two digit year for the ending date even though it changes centuries)
1999-03|JEEP|CHEROKEE

Please note: eBay has expanded the supported fitment count to 3000 compatibilities, but only in certain categories and under certain conditions. It is important to understand how the limits are defined so that you do not exceed them and have your listing rejected by eBay.

When submitting your fitment information, eBay will take the specified values (such as Year, Make, and Model) and then automatically expand that to all of the variants that match. For example, you may only submit "2004|SUBARU|FORESTER" as a single option, but eBay will expand that to several records for all of the different Trim and Engine options available for that model.

After expanding it, eBay requires that there be no more than 3000 compatibilities. Because of that automatic expansion, submitting just a handful of vehicles that have many Trim and Engine combinations could easily exceed the 3000 limit.

To support backward compatibility, eBay will also allow up to 300 Year/Make/Model options to be submitted, even if the total count of Trim and Engine values exceeds 3000. If any Trim or Engine values are submitted then this rule will not apply and the limit of 3000 of the expanded compatibilities will apply.
