How To

Common eBay Errors

When listing to eBay it is possible that you encounter listing errors. The table below outlines the common ones and provides a solution to fix the error and ensure the affected product is listed successfully on the marketplace.

Error Message Suggested Resolution

Listing is missing required item specific(s).

Make sure all required item specifics are being passed to eBay, and in the value format, eBay will accept.

The configured category value of 'XXXX' is not a valid category for eBay listings.

When this warning is seen, the eBay category needs to be updated. From time to time, eBay will update categories unannounced. Usually these instances involve eBay's category number for the existing category. These changes are hard to see and can sometimes be the reason for an error message that is otherwise unclear.

For eBay Custom users, click the Ad ID and then "select a 1st category" to re-select the category and supply the updated category number.

For eBay QuickStart users, the category will be updated on the SKU using the EBAY_CATEGORY_ID attribute.

Updated category numbers can be seen via eBay's Sell Your Item form, or Support can export all current categories from an eBay site (US, UK, etc).

eBay responded with the message:
Short Message: The item cannot be listed or modified.
Long Message: The item cannot be listed or modified. The title or description may contain improper words, or the listing or seller may be in violation of eBay policy.

Click on the link for more details – this usually refers to a policy violation of some sort. A common one is that you have reached your selling limit . You might also have improper words in your title that eBay does not allow. Unfortunately, eBay does not provide insights into what these words are but you can try removing or changing some words and then attempt to relist. It's important to always click on the link for more details to determine exactly which policy eBay thinks you're violating.

Duplicate listing submission blocked based on configured settings. This item is already live in listing 1234567890. To change the setting and allow duplicates, go to Marketplaces > eBay > Settings > eBay Settings > Listings.

Ensure you don't already have this item live directly on eBay, or that you have a similar product (perhaps by Title) in CA that eBay is thinking is a duplicate listing which violates their Duplicate Listing Policy.

eBay responded with the message:

In most cases you will need to reach out to eBay to identify the issue.

eBay responded with the message:
Buyers love large photos that clearly show the item, so please upload high-resolution photos that are at least 500 pixels on the longest side. (Attempting to revise only Buyers love large photos that clearly show the item, so please upload high-resolution photos that are at least 500 pixels on the longest side. (Attempting to revise only Quantity and Price.)

You need to ensure your image size meets eBay's minimum photo requirement of 500 x 500 pixels.

eBay responded with the message:

Code: 353

Short Message: Java script not allowed.

Long Message: Your listing cannot contain javascript (".cookie", "cookie(", "replace(", IFRAME, META, or includes), cookies or base href..

This posting error occurs because eBay is seeing some type of javascript that they do not allow on their site.  The cause of this posting error can be unclear because eBay does not provide any specific information about what exactly the problem is.

Typical failures are usually caused because the ad contains one of the items below.  However, the error can also be caused by text not on this list.

.cookie, cookie(, replace(, IFRAME, META, base href, includes

This error can also be returned when embedding YouTube videos in your listing.  eBay does support the use of YouTube videos, but not YouTube's new embed style. Please follow the instructions on this page to embed YouTube videos: https://ssc.ChannelAdvisor.com/support/faqs/ebay-allows-youtube-videos-i-get-short-message-java-script-not-allowed-posting-error

One other thing to note is that eBay will also ignore all spaces when they are looking for these words. For example, if you end a sentence with a period and then start the next sentence with the word “cookie”, then eBay will just see .cookie, which is not allowed.

Finally, please also note that eBay is limiting the use of Active Content (including Javascript) starting June 2017. Learn more about eBay's changes here: http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/listing-javascript.html

Unable to submit variation listing to eBay:
The variation option is duplicated:
Values: 'Size: XXXX; Color: XXXX'
SKUs: 'XXXXX' and 'XXXXX'

Assuming you are utilizing Automatic Matching for Item Specifics:
1. Ensure that your variation is set up properly, and that varying attribute values across the children are unique. This can be checked quickly by clicking into the Parent SKU.
2. If you have verified that the variation is set up properly and there are no duplicate values, then it may be that what you are varying on is not matching up to an item specific for the listing's category on eBay. Essentially, eBay is not seeing any varying values because Item Specifics Automatic Matching is not set up appropriately. Either change the name of the varying attribute so that it is named the same as the item specific at eBay, or create a Global Template Tag to map the name of the item specific eBay is looking for to the template tag for the varying attribute.

Unable to submit variation listing to eBay: The SKU 'XXXXX' has no variation options.

Configure variation information on the inventory item and ensure it is either submitted based on the posting template configuration or by automatic matching and automatic variation creation. Resubmit the variation listing after the information has been configured on the items.

If you see this error I would view the related page on ebay to ensure you understand ebay's policy.

As long as you are marking the items as shipped, the funds should come through after 7 days. If you are also uploading your tracking numbers the funds should after 3 days. If you were not previously uploading tracking information and have any questions about doing so, please see our tracking faq's and guide.

If you don't provide tracking information or mark the item as shipped, or the estimated delivery date can't be calculated, your funds will be available 21 days after your buyer pays.

Rarely this error can be due to your account not meeting the minimum performance standard required of all eBay sellers, or a higher than normal level of risk is associated with this transaction or with your account. If you believe this to be the case, I would contact eBay directly.

eBay responded with the message:

Code: 10007

Short Message: Internal error to the application.

Long Message: Internal error to the application.

Whenever eBay has problems processing new posting attempts, this will generally cause the above error. When this error occurs, our system continues to re-attempt posting of the item. If you eventually see this posting error in Marketplaces > eBay > Performance > Listing Errors view, this means that our system has stopped attempting to post the item.

We recommend deleting the posting error. This will allow the schedule to automatically retry posting the item, until either the item is successfully posted or another more descriptive listing error is provided from eBay.

XML Parse Error

XML parse errors are typically caused by having unrecognized characters in your ads. These characters are not supported by eBay and are rejected with this error. The characters are often hidden characters that were probably added to your text when copying from a program such as Word and pasting it into ChannelAdvisor account.

If you open your text in a text editor like Notepad, the characters will show up as a small square (black border and white inside). You will need to search and delete these characters from any text that is included in any component of your ads, i.e. SKU, Posting Template, Ad Template, etc.

After removing all of these characters you can try posting the item again.

This can also be caused by XML code located in your description template, item description, etc. that is breaking the XML used to post your listing. Remove any XML and try again.

This error also occurs when "Strikethrough Comparison Price" field in the posting template is mapped to something other than the 2 restricted fields - SoldOffeBay and SoldOneBay.

Invalid Duration

This posting error can occur if the duration selected for the listing is not valid for the type of listing.

The valid durations for eBay listings are:

Auctions: 1, 3, 5, 7, 10 days

Fixed Price: 3, 5, 7, 10, 30 days

Fixed Price items can also carry a Good Til Canceled duration if you have created a storefront for your seller account.

If overrides are provided for international postage, you need to provide overrides for all services in international postage

**Note that this can be reported for both international and domestic shipping**

This error is reported when changes have been made to a shipping policy in eBay and the data for this policy hasn't been updated to reflect these changes in ChannelAdvisor. ChannelAdvisor will only automatically update policy information every 24 hours. This is why it is recommended to re-import business policies every time changes are made at your eBay seller account.

To resolve this error, please follow these steps:

1) Go to the Marketplaces > eBay > Settings > eBay Settings > Business Policies page and select "Import Business Policies"

2) Once the policies have been updated, go to the Marketplaces > eBay > Performance > Open Listings page. selected the impacted listings, and click 'Revise Item'.

Short Message: The price for this item cannot be updated since it is a part of a sale.

Long Message: The price for this item cannot be updated since it is a part of a sale. If you wish to update the price of this item, please remove it from sale, or use a sale setting that will always allow price updates.

eBay has now added some new elements to the sale management tools that allow a price increase to be blocked while the item is on a sale.

To prevent the sale from ending on eBay, ChannelAdvisor has put a fallback measure in place in which the price will be dropped from the revision so that the rest of the listing can revise.

The listing was administratively ended by eBay If eBay administratively closes a listing because of a policy violation, ChannelAdvisor will display an error for the item reading "The listing was administratively ended by eBay." This error will prevent the item from re-posting automatically. To resume regular posting functionality, please resolve the error given by eBay, and then delete the error message in ChannelAdvisor so that our system can try to post the product again.

Short Message: Cannot list with both product listing details and item compatibilities.
Long Message: Cannot list with both product listing details and item compatibilities. Either provide product listing details or manually specify item compatibilities.

This error occurs for sellers who are both:
– Trying to map to the eBay catalog
AND
– Sending manual fitment.

You probably know that If you are sending manual fitment, you should not send a value for the Catalog Search Term field on the posting template. However, there is one other catalog related field on the posting template that you need to be aware of: Include eBay Product Details.

When a value of true is sent for Include eBay Product Details, it tells eBay on the back-end that we intend on utilizing eBay's catalog information. If information is also sent from the Manual Compatability/Fitment field, that enters us into a contradiction in which we have specified eBay Catalog information for Fitment, but have also tried to provide Manual Fitment information.

If you have items on the same posting template that use manual fitment and others that use catalog, business rules for the Include eBay Product Details and Catalog Search Term fields work well to avoid that eBay error.

Here is an example for turning Include eBay Product Details On/Off, where manual fitment is being sent from an attribute called ManualFitment:

IF(ISBLANK($manualfitment),"true","false")
