How To

Determining eBay Categories (QuickStart)

It will be important to have a clear understanding of what eBay categories you plan on listing to and also to be aware of the various data requirements to list in those categories. It is also important to take the time to make sure that you are selecting the most applicable category for each of your products to list to. Each eBay category is assigned a category ID. This number will be needed when posting your items to eBay in order to be listed in the correct category. There are several ways to obtain this information.

Prerequisites

The following topics should be reviewed before completing this task.

eBay Categorizer

If you do not have eBay Category IDs for each of your items, ChannelAdvisor will automatically populate this info with eBay’s recommendation based on your item title. The process is triggered automatically the first time after you switch on your product feed and items are sent to eBay. When the category value is received from eBay, it will be stored as a custom inventory attribute called EBAY_CATEGORY_ID. This value can be modified directly in the Edit Item page in ChannelAdvisor or via a bulk inventory upload if needed. When the Categorizer is used, the actual human readable category name will be stored as a custom inventory attribute called EBAY_SUGGESTED_CATEGORY. Once your items are listed, EBay Insights will also suggest categories if they detect that a different category would be more suitable.

IMPORTANT: Please use almost the same title for a parent and its child items. You can include variation details for the children. But should refrain from adding more. Otherwise you get different category IDs within the same family and cannot list those items as variation listings.
Example: "Mens Long Sleeve Pique Polo Shirt" (parent) - "Mens Long Sleeve Pique Polo Shirt M, red", "Mens Long Sleeve Pique Polo Shirt L, red" (children)

NOTE: If you are listing on international eBay sites, it is important to use translated titles if you are using the eBay Categorizer. Non-translated titles will result in inaccurate eBay Category assignment.

If you already have eBay Category IDs for your items and do not wish to use the eBay Categorizer, simply store the numeric eBay Category ID in a custom inventory attribute called EBAY_CATEGORY_ID.

  •   To Locate Category IDs on eBay:
    1. Go to eBay.com
    2. Select the Categories tab
    3. Select any category
    4. In the URL there will be a number visible which represents the eBay Category ID.
