How To

eBay Store Categories

If you have an eBay Store and would like to organize your items based on different store categories, there are a few things you should know.

Creating and Modifying eBay Store Categories

First and foremost, all of the store categories are created directly within eBay . This can be done by following these steps:

  1. Go to My eBay.
  2. Move your cursor above the Account tab until you see a pull-down menu.
  3. Select Manage my store.
  4. Click the Store Categories link.
  5. Click the Add Category button.

Once you have created store categories within eBay, you will then need to import the store categories into ChannelAdvisor by navigating to Marketplaces > eBay > Settings > eBay Settings > Store Categories and clicking the blue Import Categories button.

Once that button has been clicked, ChannelAdvisor will import the store category information from eBay. On the eBay Stores Categories page in ChannelAdvisor, additional information is displayed including eBay Username, Store Category ID, and Store Category Name.

Please note: Newly created store categories or changes to store categories in eBay will NOT be imported automatically into ChannelAdvisor. It is important that whenever a Store Category is created, deleted, or modified, that the data be reimported with the blue Import Categories button.

Assigning eBay Store Categories

Store Categories can be mapped via the eBay Feed Template ( Posting Template for eBay Custom users). Much like any other field on the template, the eBay Store Categories field allows for text values, field values, lookup lists and business rules to be utilized; this allows for a flexible and potentially dynamic way of applying store categories to listings.

Please note: If store categories have not yet been imported into ChannelAdvisor using the Import Categories button on the eBay Stores Categories page, the field Store Category will be hidden on the template.

eBay Custom Only

Store categories can also be set at the individual ad level. However, it is important to note that any store categories set at the ad level will override what is set in the posting template. This setting can be seen in the screenshot below.

You can update your eBay store categories in bulk by going to Marketplaces > eBay > Product Mapping > Ads view. Select the Ads that need to be changed and then click on the Store Category button and choose the eBay store category selection to update all the Ads that were selected.

There are two methods to update your ads' eBay Store Categories in bulk.

  1. Manually up to 500 at a time through the UI
    • Go to Marketplaces > eBay > Ads .
    • Scroll to the bottom of the page and change the page size to 500.
    • Search for the ads you wish to update or choose View All from the Filter By dropdown.
    • Select all of the items on the page.
    • Click More > Store Category.
    • Choose the Store Category you wish to assign and click Save and Exit.
  2. Via an Ad Upload
    • Using the Ad ID, you can bulk update your ads using a tab-delimited upload. Directions can be found here.

Common Questions

Question Answer
Can I use the eBay Store Category ID number instead of the eBay Store Category Name?

When mapping the store category field on the template, you can send either the Store Category name OR the Store Category ID.

eBay Custom Only: If you are attempting to assign a Store Category at the ad level, it is necessary to select a Store Category Name from the drop down box. There is no option for selecting the Store Category IDs at the ad level.

Why am I getting the error “If you submit any eBay Store Categories they must pre-exist in the system” or “eBay Store Category could not be found”?

If you send the Store Category Name, it must be an EXACT character-to-character match between what is sent from ChannelAdvisor and what eBay has.

eBay Store Category Name = value being submitted from ChannelAdvisor
Accessories > Hand Bags = Accessories > Hand Bags (good!)
Accessories > Hand Bags ≠ ACCESSORIES > HANDBAGS (will NOT work)

The second example does not work due to both the capitalization of the letters and the lack of a space between ‘Hand’ and ‘Bags’. Please be sure that all spelling and capitalization for the eBay Store Category Name exactly matches what was created in eBay.

Why are so many of my items being assigned to the ‘Other’ Store Category?

Check the value mapped at the template level to see if there are any problems. If using eBay Custom, don’t forget to check if a value is mapped at the Ad level. Additionally, if the Store Category that is being sent is not an EXACT match or does not exist within eBay for this item's designated eBay username, the item may be assigned to the store category as 'Other' with the Store Category ID '1'.

Can I use the same eBay Store Category names for multiple eBay usernames?

eBay Store Categories will need to be created for each eBay username separately. Additionally, when posting an item for eBay username A, you can only use eBay store categories created under eBay username A. You wouldn’t be able to use an eBay store category created under eBay username B.

What happens if I update the name of one of my Store Categories while an associated item is live?

Everything will continue to work, but it is important that you click on the Import Categories button in order to update the name in ChannelAdvisor as well. Otherwise, it will appear to be sending to one eBay store name, while displaying, on eBay, in another.
