How To

Using the Posting Template User Interface

To configure which data is sent to a marketplace you have to edit and map a Marketplace Template. For eBay, we call this Posting Template. This SSC article will review the eBay-specific features of the template. A more general overview that explains, for example, the four template mapping options can be found here .

We will cover:

Features of the user interface

Please take a closer look at these four features on the user interface:

  1. In the top left corner are the Navigation Tabs. These tabs help you quickly visit different sections of the posting template.
    • The Item Information tab is where most of the important information is located, including price, condition, GTIN (UPC/EAN, ISBN), and product images.
    • The Business Policies tab is where payment, tax, returns, and shipping information is mapped.
Note: This is true even if you are not using Business Policies.
    • The Item Specifics tab is where item specifics information is mapped and is explained in more detail in the next sections.
    • The Selling Preferences tab is where Best offer, Buyer quantity limit, and other optional features are set.

  2. By selecting and deselecting the Template Filtering options here, you have the ability to only display certain fields based on whether they are Required, Recommended, Conditional, or Optional.

  3. You will have four Mapping options for each template field: Text, Field, Lookup List, and Business Rule. All four options are explained in more detail here .

  4. A SKU Preview is located in the top right-hand corner of the screen, under the words Product Preview. Click into the search box to search for a SKU and view a preview of the information that will be sent to eBay based on what is mapped in the posting template.

Adding Categories for Item Specifics

If the posting template was originally set up for a specific eBay category, only the item specifics for that category will be displayed on the Item Specifics tab.

If the posting template was not originally set up for a specific eBay category, use of the Item Specifics tab requires enabling categories in the eBay Settings section of ChannelAdvisor. If no categories are selected, the Item Specifics tab will remain empty. Additionally, you can enable more than one category – an upgrade from the legacy template. To do so, please follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to Marketplaces > eBay > Settings > eBay Settings > Item Specifics.

  2. On this screen, all top-level eBay categories that are available for use will appear. It is best to view each of these top level categories as "umbrellas" that contain more specific categories below.
    1. For example, selecting Clothing, Shoes & Accessories will enable item specifics for all categories under that heading including Clothing, Shoes & Accessories > Men's Clothing > Casual Shirts and Clothing, Shoes & Accessories > Women's Clothing > T-Shirts.
    2. Select the top level categories that you will be selling in. Warning: Choosing more than eight top-level categories can result in long load times when opening your templates and is not recommended.

  3. Click the Save button at the top-right corner of the screen. Now the categories will be applied to all posting templates which can decrease the need for multiple posting templates.

Note: In the screenshot given above, you can see that there are two sections: eBay Categories and eBay Motors Categories. These two sections are designated to their own posting templates and cannot be used together. This is because eBay separates Fixed and Motors listings (only applies to eBay US).

Mapping Item Specifics

After enabling categories on the eBay Settings page, the posting template will have more category tabs to choose from. If multiple categories are selected, multiple tabs will be displayed, including the tab Common Category Specifics. The Common Category Specifics tab contains item specifics that pertain to more than one category. If only one category was selected, the Common Category Specifics tab will not exist and there will only be the one category tab. This is because there are no item specifics that are "common" between category tabs.

Important Note: Brand and MPN fields can be found on both the Item Specifics tab and the Item Information tab, but information sent from those fields are considered by eBay as entirely different information sets. When complying with eBay's Product Identifier (GTIN) requirement , please keep in mind that there are two different types of information that must be sent:

  • Product Identifiers (UPC, EAN, ISBN) – Typically sent through the Item Information tab of the posting template.
  • Item Specifics (Brand, MPN) – Typically sent via the Common Category Specifics tab.
    • Please map the Brand and MPN fields on the Category Item specifics tab or the Common Category Specifics tab. This will ensure that you are in compliance with eBay’s Product Identifier requirement. Failure to do so will result in listing errors from eBay for categories where Brand or MPN is required.
    • Although the Brand and MPN fields on the Item Information tab are available for mapping, the information sent from this tab will not fulfill eBay’s Product Identifier requirements. The Brand and MPN fields on the Item Information tab are used for mapping items to the eBay Catalog, as explained in more detail here .
