Tasks to Complete

To Set up Promotions on Amazon

Promotions can ONLY be set up directly on Seller Central. Once in your Seller Central account, you can create a promotion from the Inventory > Manage Promotions > Create a Promotion.

There are four (4) types of promotions that can be offered:

  • Free Shipping
  • Money Off
  • Buy One Get One
  • External Benefits

You will be led through a guide to set up your promotion. The most important piece of information necessary to ensure your orders are correctly invoiced in ChannelAdvisor is the Promotion Tracking ID. While there is no limit to the length of that ID in Amazon, only the first 20 characters will be imported into ChannelAdvisor so we recommend keeping it below 20.

To Set up Promotions in ChannelAdvisor

To ensure your orders are accurately imported into ChannelAdvisor you must create a similar promotion in the ChannelAdvisor solution. This promotion will not do anything on Amazon – the management of your Amazon promotion is done entirely in Seller Central. This promotion is simply for verification purposes during your Amazon order import.

Beyond the name of your promotion you can use bogus information. The most important part of the setup is the promotion code. The Promotion Code in ChannelAdvisor MUST MATCH the Promotion Tracking ID in Amazon so your orders can import.

  1. Select Sales > Checkout > Promotions.
  2. Click Create New Promotion  link or View All Existing Promotions  to edit a promotion record.
  3. Click the radio button to enable the Promotion Code. ( Note: This can be the last step to enable the Promotion Code after it is completely defined.)
  4. Enter the name of the Promotion Code.
  5. Select if the buyer is required to enter the promotion code in the checkout process. If "No" is selected, the promotion will automatically be applied to all qualifying orders.
  6. Enter the Seller Description. This text can only be seen by the seller, and can be used to define the promotion parameters to internal company staff.
  7. Enter the Buyer Help Text. A buyer will see this text when a promotion code is entered during Checkout . Be sure to complete this information in all supported Checkout languages .
  8. Define the Buyer Promotion Benefits
    1. The buyer may receive a fixed rate or percentage based discount off the shipping rate in their order
    2. The buyer may receive a fixed rate or percentage based discount off the order subtotal (The subtotal does not include shipping rates , insurance , sales tax or additional fees)
  9. Define the Buyer Purchase Conditions.
    1. Determine what orders qualify for the promotion (All orders, orders over a specified value, or orders containing more than one item)
    2. Specify the dates that the promotion will be valid. If a buyer attempts to use the promotion code in Checkout before the start date or after the end date specified here, the buyer will receive an message stating the promotion code is no longer valid and the discount will not be applied to the checkout.
    3. Determine what Marketplaces are eligible for this promotion. If you choose an option other than "All purchases qualify for this promotion", then the order must contain at least one item from the marketplace you have identified in order for the promotion to be used in checkout.
    4. Specify if the promotion is only valid on specific inventory items. If you choose to limit the promotion code to only specific inventory items, you will be required to identify those items when the promotion code is saved. When selecting specific inventory items for a promotion code, at least one of the items identified must appear on the checkout in order for the promotion code to be used. If the buyer attempts to use a promotion code and none of the specified inventory items are in the order, the buyer will receive an message stating the promotion code is not valid and the discount will not be applied to the checkout.
  10. Click Save and Exit.

Amazon Orders with Promotions

Once verified, by matching the Amazon Tracking ID to the ChannelAdvisor Promotion Code, your Amazon orders with promotions will be imported along side your other Amazon orders. The appropriate promotion value will be adjusted in the order at the line level.

Multiple promotions will be imported with the order information and applied to the appropriate product(s). If the promotion applies to a single product in the order it will only show in regards to that item. If the promotion is order-level, it will be applied to the line items as appropriate.

Example: Order of $100 - SKU1 of $50, SKU2 of $40, SKU3 of $10. Promotion of $10 off for orders of at least $100 will be applied as:

SKU 1: $50 - $5 (promotion)
SKU 2: $40 - $4 (promotion)
SKU 3: $10 - $1 (promotion)
Total: $90

If you receive an error that your Amazon orders could not be imported into ChannelAdvisor, you will want to confirm the Tracking ID matches the Promotion Code.

  • If the Amazon Tracking ID is 20 characters or less and the Promotion Code in ChannelAdvisor does not match, simply adjust the Promotion Code in ChannelAdvisor and the orders will import
  • If the Amazon Tracking ID is greater than 20 characters, any existing orders CANNOT be imported into ChannelAdvisor. You will need to adjust the Tracking ID in Amazon and ensure it matches a Promotion Code in ChannelAdvisor for future orders to be invoiced.
