How To

Orders in Multiple Distribution Centers Accounts

A Distribution Center (DC) is a facility or a storage location from which items are shipped for order fulfillment. For a retailer, their DC may be a Seller-Managed Distribution Center such as their own warehouse, drop shipper, or even retail store or it may be an Externally-Managed Distribution Center.

Orders in Multiple Distribution Centers Accounts

Orders in Multi DC accounts work similarly to standard accounts. If you convert to a Multi DC account from a standard account, you continue to retrieve orders from ChannelAdvisor in the same manner you currently do. There are few differences to note:

  • We will pick a DC to fulfill the order according to your prioritization on the DC Settings page, when we receive an order. After we pick a DC, we will decrement your quantity at that DC for each item on the order.
  • We will split the order into multiple fulfillments/shipments, when we determine there is not a DC to fulfill the entire order. In this scenario, we will pick an initial fulfillment/shipment DC for each line item.
  • Orders in Multi DC accounts may contain split line items. For example, you have four of SKU123 in each of your two DCs. If we receive an order for eight SKU123, we will split the SKU123 order line item into two line items associated with each of your DCs.
  • You may change the actual DC from which you fulfill each order item. When you do change the DC, we adjust your quantity at both Distribution Centers appropriately. If you do not to choose to update ChannelAdvisor with the correct fulfillment DC, the next time you provide quantity information to ChannelAdvisor, we sync with your actual quantity at each location.
  • Clients with US accounts may enable our Proximity Order Routing feature. We will pick the DC closest to the buyer that can fulfill the entire order, when we receive an order.
  • When an order spans multiple distribution centers, the order is broken into multiple shipments/fulfillments in the Order Details view. You may reassign order line items to different Distribution Centers.

Retrieving Orders in Multiple Distribution Centers Accounts

Here are some differences to note in retrieving orders from ChannelAdvisor:

  • When using the API to retrieve orders, we may provide a different DC for each SKU on the order. As noted above, SKUs may be split into multiple line items on an order when there is not enough quantity at one DC to fulfill an order.
  • If you retrieve orders using Checkout Reports, Multiple will appear in the Distribution Center column if an order line item spans multiple distribution centers.

Providing Shipping Information in Multiple Distribution Centers Accounts

  • If you use the API to update ChannelAdvisor with your shipping and tracking information, we recommend using our new Fulfillment Service to provide updates.
  • If you currently provide only order-level shipping information to ChannelAdvisor, there are no changes. If we had assigned multiple distribution centers originally to the order, we will combine the order into DC you provide with your Shipping information and adjust product quantity appropriately.
  • On orders with split line items, if you currently provide item-level shipping and tracking, we may need to make an assumption and which fulfillment/shipment you are updating.
