How To

Generating Tracking URLs

If a keyword is created within ChannelAdvisor, either by using the Add a Keyword feature or a Bulk Upload, tracking is automatically created for the keyword URL. However, there are some situations where tracking URLs need to be manually created and then assigned. For example, tracking URLs can be used in an email marketing campaign. By doing so, clicks and orders for the email campaign can be measured in ChannelAdvisor, and assists from one marketing campaign to the other can be seen. Or, if you advertise on the Search Providers' Display networks, tracking URLs need to be assigned manually to the ad creative to track clicks and conversions.

How to Track Email Campaigns

The Paid Search module has the capability to track email campaigns, specifically, the hits, assists, orders, and revenue that are generated from emails. Email tracking works by generating a redirect Tracking URL in ChannelAdvisor, and then embedding that URL into the email HTML.

To track email campaigns:

  1. In ChannelAdvisor, select Digital Marketing > Marketing Management > Actionable Reporting.
  2. Click Tools, and select Generate Tracking URLs from the drop-down menu that appears. The Generate Tracking URLs page opens.
  3. Select Email from the Channel and Provider drop-down menus.
  4. This page works by entering a keyword and a Base URL (or landing page URL, where the ad will point to). For email, the Keyword should describe the email campaign.
    1. In the Keyword Data section, for each Email Tracking URL you wish to create, use the following format: Keyword**Base URL
Example: july 20 2009 email promo**http://www.mysite.com (where "july 20 2009 email promo" is the Keyword, and "http://www.mysite.com" is the Base URL for the landing page the ad will point to)
    2. Type each Keyword**Base URL string on separate lines of the section.
  5. Click Save.
  6. The page will return a link to export the Tracking URLs to an Excel spreadsheet. The spreadsheet will contain the tracking URLs in the Tracked URL column (in the format of http://tracking.searchmarketing.com followed by unique identifiers for your keyword and Base URL).
  7. Copy the Tracking URL from the spreadsheet, and embed it in the HTML for the email before it is sent out.
