Configuring Sales Tax Settings

Use the Sales Tax settings to enable or disable tax collection for the account on all transactions using the ChannelAdvisor Checkout. This setting is only applicable to Direct Checkouts in the United States.

Configure your sales tax nexus and specify the exact tax rates to be charged in Checkout using this settings page.

Note: Though we support direct checkout in ChannelAdvisor we recommend that you use your own cart system or webstore amplifier via our API for generating orders directly from customers.

 

Steps to Configure Checkout Sales Tax


Follow the steps below to configure sales tax for ChannelAdvisor Checkout:

  1. Navigate to your Sales > Checkout > Sales Tax view.
     
  2. In the Sales Tax view, complete the following fields:
    • Disable Sales Tax Module – Use this setting to disable sales tax calculations on a per account basis.
      Please Note: If the tax module is disabled, no tax will be charged to any buyer in checkout.
    • Enable Sales tax Collection Module Based on Selected Countries – Select the countries in which sales tax must be charged. CyberSource provides US tax calculations as well as International (exclusive) value added taxes. Enable only the countries in which the company must charge the resident (buyer) tax on their purchase. The tax will be added to the order at the time of checkout.
    • Select Taxable Countries in Nexus in which Sales Tax must be charged: Enable the states and/or provinces (regions) of the countries in which sales tax must be charged.
    • Click Save.
       
  3. If you chose a country that includes regions, for example selecting the United States will display all states, an additional settings page will be displayed allowing you to configure the taxable regions for your account.
    • Taxable Regions in Nexus – Specify the states or regions/provinces in which sales tax must be charged on items included on the invoice. In the US, the seller is generally only required to charge tax in states where they have a company presence. For example, if the company has offices in NC, SC, and GA, a sales tax charge would be required in these states. 
    • Charge Sales tax on Shipping Amount – Tax is calculated on the monetary value of only the items sold in the invoice for the selected areas. Checking this box will also charge sales tax on the shipping amount of the invoice. Do not check this box if you so not want to charge sales tax on the shipping amount.
       
  4. If your account is configured to allow you to specify the tax rates, then click Save and Continue.
    • A settings page with all the enabled regions/states will appear, allowing you to enter a specific tax rate for each. Tax rates can be specified up to three decimal point. For example, 7.375%.
