Tasks to Complete

There are several types of template tags that can be utilized to achieve your goals

  • Attribute Template Tags These types of template tags are most commonly used to send ebay item specific information to eBay.

  • Global Template Tags – These types of template tags are most commonly used to configure your inventory for the  Automatic Matching Functionality without having to change any of your attribute names to match eBay's item specifics values.

  • Advanced Template Tags There are several advanced template tags that can also assist you:
    • Nesting – To reference Template Tags from within Template Tags.
    • Calculations – You can perform mathematical calculations on Template Tags that are used in eBay Posting Templates to achieve a particular posting strategy.

Creating and Applying Attribute Template Tags

For every attribute in your inventory Attribute Template Tags are automatically created and available for use. These template tags will substitute whatever value is used to populate that attribute for a given SKU.

Follow the steps below to complete this task:

  1. To view existing template tags in your account navigate to your Marketplaces > eBay > Settings > Template Tags view.
  2. Select the Create a New Template Tag link.
  3. On the left side of the screen select the link entitled Click here to view existing template tags.
  4. If a template tag does not exist create a new attribute in your inventory. This will automatically create a new template tag with the following format {{ATTRIBUTENAME}}
  5. You can then apply this template tag to your eBay Description Template .
  6. You can also use this template tag to create a global template tag or an advanced template tag.

Example:
If you create an attribute named "eBay Color" and input "brown" for that attribute in SKU 123ABC anytime template tag {{eBay Color}} is used, it will pull in "brown" for that SKU.

Please note that for eBay, templates tags need to be written to exactly match the attribute name. This includes special characters and spaces.

Creating and Applying Global Template Tags

Follow the steps below to complete this task:

  1. Navigate to your Marketplaces > eBay > Settings > Template Tags view.
  2. Click on the Create New Template Tag link.
  3. Give your new tag a name. (If configuring for Automatic Matching the tag name should match the eBay Item Specific value exactly.)
  4. The description field will contain the contents that will be included in the tag.
    • You can either enter the attribute name in template tag format {{ATTRIBUTENAME)).
    • Or you can also enter a text value.
  5. You can then apply this template tag to your eBay Description Template
Example 1: Configuring for Automatic Matching
Say you need to send the Item Specific value of Size (Mens) but your attribute name is called Size and you don't want to change your attribute name. You would follow the steps above and for the template tag name you would enter Size (Mens) and in the description field you would enter {{Size}}.

Example 2: Description layout for ebay Description Templates
In the Description field, you can enter in a layout of the description and include references to attributes within it. If needed, you can also include full HTML layout. For example, if you surround your data with <DIV> tags and those are passed up in a description, your designer can use them to create different interfaces on a product page using style sheets (CSS). You can also have simpler formatting such as <UL> and <LI> HTML tags to create a list of attributes. If you choose to add HTML in the layout then you will want to check on the Contains HTML check-box. Here is an example for a tag called Woman Shoe Description:
