Understanding Common eBay Variation Listing Error Messages

Error messages from listing eBay Variation Listings can sometimes be confusing and complicated to resolve.  Many times they result from items that have posted individually without problem but do not have appropriate data to be packaged together as a variation listing.  These common error messages should give you better insight into the error messages that result from submitting variation listing and how to quickly resolve them.

Error MessageMeaningResolution
 eBay responded with the message:
Code: 21916586
Short Message: Duplicate variation specifics
Long Message: Duplicate name-value combination in variation specifics.
This error message means that two or more of the children have the exact same variation combination, such as having two items that have the color of "red" and the size of "L".  Because the children have the exact same options, eBay is unable to uniquely determine which one a buyer would want if they selected "red, L" on the eBay listing.  This can also happen when your inventory items vary different from the values available at eBay, such as if you vary by Size and Color and eBay only has Size. Update your inventory information so that the items can be uniquely identified based on the values submitted for the item specifics on each child item.  eBay uses the values configured in the item specifics to determine the variation options, so make sure that the item specifics configured on the posting template or the ad are accurate.  Also check to see if the Automatic Item Specifics for Variation Listings may help by creating additional fields to submit your information with the appropriate level of detail.
 eBay responded with the message:
Code: 21916601
Short Message: ClosedNameSpace tag error.
Long Message: Invalid tag value(s) in ClosedNameSpace tag(s) Size.
eBay has limited the values that can be submitted for certain item specifics values.  This error means that the "Size" item specific can only be submitted using the values that eBay has defined in the drop-down list.  If you have values that do not match to this list, you will be unable to submit your item.  Even if they do not restrict the values to those in the list, it is to your advantage to match the eBay-defined values as often as possible when appropriate for your item.  As of October 2009, eBay is reducing the number of restrictions on the fields and should cause this error to happen less frequently which also allows sellers to have more flexibility when defining their item. Update your inventory item to use the eBay-defined values when submitting the information to eBay.  This may require creating an inventory item classification attribute for the eBay definition of the value when you do not want to change the existing inventory item value.  If you cannot find appropriate values in the list from eBay for your item, you will need to not send this item as part of a variation listing.  According to eBay sources, this limitation should be completely removed in May 2010, however eBay has introduced it again in 2011 for certain fields in Clothing, Shoes and Accessories.
 eBay responded with the message:
Code: 21916626
Short Message: Requires Unique Variation Specifics and Item Specifics.
Long Message: Variations Specifics and Item Specifics entered for a Multi-SKU item should be different.
This sometimes happens when the variation dimensions change from an initial listing to a relist submitted later.  If the original item varied on Size, and the new listing varies on Size and Color, eBay cannot understand the relationship between the old variations and the new variations as part of the relist submission.  The relationship is trying to carry over the sales history information for the Best Match algorithm, but cannot understand the changes from the original listing to the new submission. The simplest solution is to submit the item as a new listing instead of as a relist.  This can be done by selecting one of the children from the Errored Listings view and using the Post Now option.  When selecting the information on the Post Now page, make sure to select "do not use relist".  The other errors can be deleted, because submitting any of the children will automatically collect all of the children together to create the variation listing.  If multiple items are selected as part of the Post Now, one will process and the others will get the duplicate error message.
 eBay responded with the message:
Code: 21916664
Short Message: Variation Specifics Mismatch.
Long Message: Variation Specifics provided does not match with the variation specifics of the variations on the item.
When one or more of the variations are missing the appropriate information, this error is the result of the calculation at eBay to determine if valid information is configured on all of the items.  This can happen when several children are part of a variation listing but only some of them have values configured for one of the item specifics.  If we consider "color", if three of the items are configured with "red" and two have no value configured at all, it is not clear if those two should be additional "red" options or if they are meant to be a different color.  This uncertainty is the cause of the error. Verify that appropriate values are configured on all items.  With the October 2009 release, a new error message will help identify the exact values that are missing.

 eBay responded with the message:
Code: 21916587
Short Message: Missing name in name-value list.
Long Message: Missing name in the variation specifics or variation specifics set.

 eBay responded with the message:
Code: 291
Short Message: Auction ended.
Long Message: You are not allowed to revise ended auctions.
This happens when a child is submitted for a revise to be added to a currently open listing, but that currently open listing is no longer open on eBay. A change in the October 2010 release should minimize or eliminate these error messages, as they are caused when a variation listing ends and the children are all being processed for closings or when a variation has been ended on eBay but the closure has not been detected to update the Open Listings view.  If some of the children are processed before the others, it is possible for those first few to try and create a new listing and see their siblings as still open and available for purchase.  In the meantime, deleting these errors from the Errored Listings view should be sufficient for them to retry and be included as part of the currently open variation listing.
 eBay responded with the message:
Code: 515
Short Message: Invalid quantity.
Long Message: The quantity you submitted is invalid. The quantity should be greater than 0 for an active item.
This appears to be an error in the eBay system when some of the variations have sold out and other variations are being added to the open listing.  The eBay system sees a quantity of 0 on the variation that has completely sold out and is raising an error that 0 cannot be used for a quantity. This is currently being investigated by eBay.  At this time the only way to resolve the error is to withdraw the children that are still available at eBay in the open listing and let the system submit a new listing with all of the children included.
 eBay responded with the message:
Code: 21916608
Short Message: Variation cannot be deleted during restricted revise.
Long Message: Variation cannot be deleted during restricted revise.
This appears to happen after one or more sales happen on a variation listing and a new variation child is being added to the listing.  The eBay system has flagged that transactions have happened on the listing and is incorrectly restricting the options that can be revised. This is currently being investigated by eBay.  At this time the only way to resolve the error is to withdraw the children that are still available at eBay in the open listing and let the system submit a new listing with all of the children included.
 eBay responded with the message:
Code: 37
Short Message: Input data is invalid.
Long Message: Input data for tag <Item.Variations.Variation[1].StartPrice> is invalid or missing. Please check API documentation.
One or more of the child variations do not have a price value configured. Configure a price value on each of the child items and resubmit the variation listing.
Duplicate variation listing posting attempt detected and prevented.  This error may be safely deleted.Processing for listings to eBay is a complicated process that is spread among many different machines.  These machines are designed to allow for high throughput of submission on eBay listings to ensure that your items are not delayed in the listing process.  In order to make them the most efficient, they are designed to process quickly and note the results of their submission as an open or errored listing.  Each request for each item that is being processed is an independent unit of work submitted to the machines, so when multiple children are submitted at the same time that creates multiple units of work that may go to different machines for the fastest processing possible.  Since a posting request for a single child is sufficient to package all of the children together to create a variation listing, we want to prevent multiple variation listings from being submitted for the same family of items.  That would cause excess fees to be charged and have the listings compete with each other, lowering their standing in best match.  Based on the current system processing, this is the best way to be able to prevent multiple variation listings from being submitted for the same item.  Continuing work is underway to minimize the number of times that this error message is generated automatically by the system, but it is key to keep in place at the moment to ensure that multiple variation listings for the same items are not submitted to eBay.

This will also happen if a child is selected for Post Now and is already available in an open listing.  In order to prevent creating a second variation listing, this error will be logged so that you know the processing request was acknowledged and attempted, but that the work was stopped to prevent creation of a duplicate variation listing.
None is required.  The error messages can be deleted without harm.
Unable to submit variation listing to eBay:
SKU 'XXXXX' is missing a value for Main Color
One or more of the children do not have values configured for one of the variation dimensions.  When this inconsistent data is encountered it is known that it will cause one of the previously mentioned eBay errors.  Because we know the details of all of the items and that it is 100% sure to cause an error from eBay, we are able to clearly identify each SKU that is missing specific fields so you can quickly update the items and resubmit the information.  The error message will detail the values missing from each SKU in the variation listing so that they may be updated and resubmitted.Configure appropriate values for each of the elements noted as missing.  Resubmit the variation listing after the information has been configured on the items.
eBay responded with the message:
Code: 21916580
Short Message: Values in name-value list exceed limit 30.
Long Message: Values per name-value list exceed limit 30 in variation specifics set container.
eBay has a limit of 30 options that can be included in a single variation drop-down list, such as Color or Size.Modify your inventory items to reduce the number of options submitted for any specific list.  You may have to adjust your inventory relationships or how the various item specifics are defined to reduce the number of options to 30 or less.  Resubmit the variation listing after the information has been modified on the inventory items.
Unable to submit variation listing to eBay:
The child SKU 'XXXXX' cannot be added to the open variation listing 1234567890 because of a conflict:
Item Specific 'XXXXX' conflict:
Open eBay Listing Value: 'XXXXX'
Requested Child Item Value: 'XXXXX'
When variation listings are submitted, only those values that have differences among the children are submitted as variation options for selection by the buyer.  All values that are consistent among all of the available children are submitted as Item Specifics and not as variation options.  If a new child attempts to add to an existing open eBay listing and requires a different value from the current eBay listing, eBay cannot accept the item.  eBay rules prevent item specifics from being converted to variation options after the listing is initially created.  For example, if all of the child items have a Color of "Green" at the initial listing time and then a "Red" item is submitted to add to the variation listing, eBay cannot support it because the open listing has an item specific Color value of "Green" and that cannot be changed to become a variation option that the buyer can choose from when purchasing. In order to include the new child into an eBay listing, the current open listing must be withdrawn and a new listing submitted.  When the new listing is submitted the new child will be included and force the system to use the conflicting option as a variation option instead of a defined item specific value.  If this is a repeated problem from substantial variance in quantity availability among child items, contact support or your account manager for additional options that may be available for your listings.
Unable to submit variation listing to eBay:
The variation option is duplicated:
Values: 'Size: XXXX; Color: XXXX'
SKUs: 'XXXXX' and 'XXXXX'
Two different SKUs have been submitted with the exact same child options such as a Size of XL and a Color of Black.  eBay cannot distinguish between these two children to clearly identify them for selection by buyers, so the listing cannot be submitted.Modify the inventory information so that each child is uniquely identified.  If the current values cannot be changed, then it will be necessary to define additional elements in order to uniquely identify each child item in a variation listing.  Resubmit the variation listing after the information has been uniquely configured on the items.
Unable to submit variation listing to eBay:
The SKU 'XXXXX' has no variation options.
This error message is created when a SKU is submitted for a variation listing but has no elements configured to define different child options such as Size, Color, Style or Design.Configure variation information on the inventory item and ensure it is either submitted based on the posting template configuration or by automatic matching and automatic variation creation.  Resubmit the variation listing after the information has been configured on the items.
Unable to submit variation listing to eBay:
SKU 'XXXXX' has a value of 'XXXXXXXXX' for Color, which exceeds the maximum allowed length of 50 characters. Reduce the length of the variation option value and resubmit the listing.
eBay cannot support variation options with values more than 50 characters long.  Furthermore, eBay will only display the first 30 characters to buyers looking at your items.Reduce the length of the variation options.  It is strongly recommended to reduce them to 30 characters or less so the entire value is displayed, but any value less than 50 characters will be accepted by eBay and successfully create a variation listing.  Resubmit the variation listing after the information has been modified on the items.

There is an eBay limit of 30

There is an eBay limit of 30 options per variation dimension, such as 30 sizes, 30 colors, or 30 material options.  The limit of eBay variations is:

* 5 dimensions
* 30 options per dimension
* 120 variation children total

If your variatiion configuration has more than any of these, you will need to change it to have less in order to be supported by eBay.  I have updated the main SSC page to include this information:

I am not familiar with that

I am not familiar with that one right off hand, but one thing I would check would be to see if you have values that are in different capitalizations, like "white" and "White" and "WHITE".  That could cause that type of error to happen.  I have a note that it's something I want to automatically address at posting time but it is also something you can fix by changing the values to be consistent in their capitalization.

If that does not address the issue, I suggest opening a support case so we can dig into it some more and if we find a situation relevant to more people we can add it as a new message in this list.

Update to solve error in July release

We have applied an update as of the July release that should prevent this error from happening.  We found that it was happening when different capitalization was used among the child items, such as "WHITE" and "white" and "White".  We have applied a change to reconcile all of those together such that eBay will properly accept and process them.

error Code: 5112

Hi,

I'm getting a new error from for some variation listings.  Here it is:

eBay responded with the message:
Code: 5112
Short Message: Attribute Set Id "25" does not match category.
Long Message: Your Item Specifics (No VCS for primary category. No VCS for secondary category. Attribute System Version 6905. ) do not match the category you selected. Please upload the latest Item Specifics from eBay to continue listing.

Have you seen this before?  Could you decode the "VCS" acronym for me?  I haven't seen it before.  It's probably something obvious, but I can't decode it.  Any help you could provide would be appreciated!  Thanks! -Dan

Translation:  The category

Translation:  The category you are using for this item does not support any item specifics at all.  Do not send any item specifics values when listing this item.

You should not be getting this error for a variation listing -- the error message tells me some underlying information at eBay that says the category in question can't support variation listings.  The easiest way to resolve this is to check your posting template and ad and remove any item specifics that may be configured for the item.  If there are none configured, it may be a relist attempt (would have a green RELIST in the errors view) and eBay is trying to carry over the information from the original listing.  If that is the case, you can select Post Now from the errored listings view and make sure to select "do not use relist" when it is submitted so eBay doesn't try to carry over information from the previous listing.

This used to come up a lot more, but eBay has changed how they do item specifics under the covers and we've been able to get a lot of this type of error message to go away.

Thanks!

You were right!  It was the relist problem you identified.  I did "post now", changed the relist radio button at the bottom and they all went through.  I did the same with another variation posting and that worked too.  Thank you.

The SKU you have noted either

The SKU you have noted either does not have any values configured for the variation elements (like Size, Color, etc.) on the inventory item or on the posting template.  Since those have not been detected, the posting process doesn't know how to uniquely identify that child item when listing it for a buyer to purchase.

First, you should check your inventory item to ensure that the values you want to use are there.  If not, they will need to be added.  If they are, then it means that the posting process is unable to see them.  There are two ways for that to be seen: configure item specifics on the posting template or use automatic matching.  If you are configuring item specifics on the posting template, make sure you have the right attributes configured (spelling matters).  If you are using automatic matching, make sure that you have it enabled and that you are using the same name for the variation option (in your Variation Relationship configuration [Inventory > Products > Product Variations]) that you use for the attributes (in your Attributes configuration [Inventory > Grouping > Attributes]).

I have no idea what this even means. We have thousands of products listed on eBay, and hundreds of listing errors. This is one of the errors that there are plenty of. Does anybody know what this is? How do we correct it?

It has nothing to do with the

It has nothing to do with the variations, but there is an error in your shipping rates on the posting template.  Specifically, the third domestic shipping option has a bad value in the "first" rate field.  It may be a bad tag or a typo in the value, but fixing that value should get your items to post normally.

Marshall...

Ok. Are you looking in the right account? We have multiple posting accounts that we use. I am interested in correcting this in all of them ,but the question was regarding the account " Infinite Beauty Supply - US" . We do have this issue on other accouhnts too, and I will check to see if this could be their issue. We used the little tool next to the field to create the tag. Is that not always accurate? I also don't understand why this would only happen to a handful of products when we have almost 10,000 items on this account and most of them are being sent out to Amazon, eBay, etc. Do you have any idea why these few products would be affected, but no others?

Thanks for the help.

James

Variation Listing Conflict

Hello,

Here is the error message:

The child SKU '03224 001 54' cannot be added to the open variation listing 220824766462 because of a conflict:
Item Specific 'Size (Women's)' conflict:
Open eBay Listing Value: 'XS'
Requested Child Item Value: 'L'

An item specific value cannot be revised and converted to a variation option after the initial posting. To create as a variation option, withdraw the open listing and resubmit.

I have a handful of these.  "Post Now" does not work to re-list, and I cannot withdraw from open listings because they are not "open" because of the error.

Please advise...

Thanks.

Please Help with Variation Listing

Hi,

I keep getting this error even though I have each child sku as a unique sku with unique options (S,M,L). Any ideas on what could be causing this and what I can do to resolve this?

The weird thing is that I have other variation listings working perfectly fine.

Error Message

Unable to submit variation listing to eBay:
The variation option is duplicated:
Values: '31960: '
SKUs: '9027Q07002' and '9027Q07001'

All child items in a variation listing must be unique to ensure buyer accuracy. Revise the SKU values so that each has unique values or add additional variation options to uniquely identify each item.

The way that error message is

The way that error message is written implies that you have a variation dimension of "31960" with an empty value in both of those SKUs and that it is the only variation option configured.  There is no Size or Color being seen by the system and since 31960 isn't an eBay-defined item specific it must be coming from your inventory information based on automatic variations.  You should check the configuration of your inventory items to make sure they are properly defined with the variation details that you want to be used on your items.  If you still can't figure it out after that, please open a case with support so we can assist based on your specific information.

That is not related to

That is not related to variation listings.  You do not have any valid shipping options configured on your posting template that can be used by the eBay listing.  If you have options configured on the posting template, the most common cause is that the values configured for the shipping amounts are not valid, so check the values you have entered or the underlying values for any replacement tags you have there.
