How To

Using Automatic Item Specifics Creation for eBay Variation Listings

Sometimes the item specifics options at eBay do not allow a seller to accurately describe their items in a variation listing. eBay supports the capability of creating your own item specifics fields to describe the items accurately, and now you can configure your account to automatically create those fields as defined by your inventory item information. When enabled, the automatic processing will take the information from your inventory items and create all of the fields necessary to ensure that they can be submitted to eBay as a variation listing .

How to Use Automatic Item Specifics Creation for eBay Variation Listings

To use automatic item specifics creation for eBay Variation Listing follow the steps below:

  1. Navigate to your Marketplaces > eBay > Settings > eBay Settings.

  2. Edit your Listings settings.

  3. In the Variation Listings section, select the option to Enable Automatic Item Specifics creation for variations that are defined in inventory but are not in the default item specifics list from eBay.

Once enabled, each variation item submitted to eBay will be compared against the available item specifics for the eBay category. If there are fields on the inventory item that are not described by eBay, they will be created and used to ensure the variation is accurately described.

Example:

If there is a variation item with dimensions of

  • "Color"

  • "Material"

  • "Button Count"

And the eBay category has

  • "Size"

  • "Length"

  • "Main Color"

  • "Material"

Then the eBay fields of "Size", "Length", and "Main Color" will not be used because no inventory attribute field matched to those items. (See table below)

Inventory Field

Mapped to eBay Item Specifics Field

Reason

Color

None. A new "Color" field is created.

The eBay field of "Main Color" does not have the same name, so it is not used. A new "Color" field is created and the inventory values are used.

Material

Material

The field names match exactly so the eBay-defined Material field is used.

Button Count

None. A new "Button Count" field is created.

There is no eBay field for this value so a new field is created to have the values from the inventory items.

Please Note:  The values must match exactly or a new field will be created (as shown in the example for Color above). This functionality can be used with the automatic item specifics matching to create variation listings directly from inventory with just a single universal posting template. This can also be used with existing category-specific posting templates to instruct the processing system to create additional variation options for items submitted if the eBay information is insufficient to completely describe the variation items. This can be very useful in categories where products often vary by both Size and Color but the eBay item specifics only have one of those fields present.

If you have items that do not fit within the eBay options, this can allow you to create inventory in your account with any type of variation that you want and submit that variation exactly to become an eBay listing. Note that when you do not use the eBay-defined fields and instead create your own, your item may not match up with the filtering options eBay provides to buyers in the search results.

Reference

eBay's variations system only allows a maximum of five dimensions for variation listings. If your inventory items vary on six or more values, the automatic processing will try to create more dimensions than eBay can support and will result in an error.

The name of the variation dimension in the inventory and the name of the inventory attribute must be the same. Using values such as "Color" for the variation dimension name and "EBAY_COLOR_VALUE" or even "Main Color" as the inventory attribute name will not work. In this case the best path is generally to change the inventory attribute names to be consistent with the variation dimension names.
