How To

Withdrawing eBay Listings With No Sales

If an eBay listing has been live for an extended period of time with no recent sales, it may be demoted in Best Match search results lower than a brand new listing with zero sales. A fresh listing can be created by ending the existing live listing and allowing a new listing to be created for the same product. To make this easier, an automatic service is available to remove eBay listings without sales for an extended period of time. The schedule will then re-activate for the product and submit a new listing to eBay.

Background

With the introduction of the Best Match functionality, different factors are used to generate the ranking in search results at eBay. One of the factors used is based on the number of recent sales and the conversion rate of buyers that click through to the item. When a listing has been available to buyers for an extended period of time with few to no sales, it is possible that the Best Match results are demoting the visibility because of a poor conversion rate score as calculated by eBay. This can effectively be reset by ending the current listing and creating a new listing for the same product. While this can also diminish visibility by ending the existing listing that may have watchers or be syndicated out to other shopping channels, some sellers find this to expand visibility for products that have not been selling well against competitor listings.

Common Questions

Question Answer
Why should I use this feature?

Some sellers find that their listings get better visibility when they are newly created rather than as long-running listings with no sales. This makes it very easy and automatic to identify and end any long-running listings that have generated no sales for a defined period of time and create a new "fresh" listing for that product to increase visibility.

When is a listing withdrawn?

If a listing has had zero sales for a certain number of months specified in settings, then the listing will be withdrawn. The timing is designed to maximize visibility for GTC listings while minimizing the listing fee charges from eBay.

Are there any disadvantages?

Ending a listing will disconnect any eBay buyers that have previously looked at the listing, even if they did not purchase. They may be watching the listing or automatically notified when changes are applied to the listing, and any links directing buyers to the product on eBay such as search results or shopping engines will no longer find the product information.

What data is used to calculate the number of months specified in the Withdraw Listings With No Sales settings?

The system uses the number of days from the Days Without A Sale column in the Open Listings view. This column can be added by clicking the Column button and moving it to the Visible Columns section. The listing will actually be withdrawn 1 day before the number of months specified to avoid the additional insertion fee that occurs every 30 days. For example, if the setting is set to 6 months, the system will withdraw a listing if the last sale is 179 days or older (6*30)-1.

How is the “no sales” time frame calculated for variation listings?

The calculation looks at the sales on a variation listing as a whole, not sales of individual child SKUs. The system will review all sales, then cross check the most recent sale on each variation listing with the withdraw listings setting. If the Days Without A Sale number is older than the number of months in the settings, the listing will be withdrawn.
