What You'll Need

Variation listings allow you to provide all of the similar items in a single eBay Fixed Price listing to make it easier for the buyer to find the size, color, or other option that they would like to purchase.

Note: Not all eBay categories support variation listings. Please see eBay for additional details . If a category is not enabled for variation listings by eBay, your products will appear as individual listings.

1. Create a description template for your variation listings.

Note: Don't include child-related information in your template.  The description template portion of your listing is static and does not update based on the child item selected in the drop-down menu on eBay.

Complete the following steps:

  • Go to Marketplaces > eBay > Product Mapping > Description Templates.
  • Make a copy of your current description template.
  • Remove any template tags that pull in data from your child items, especially attributes such as {{SIZE}} or {{COLOR}} to avoid confusing buyers.
  • Replace your {{ITEMTITLE}} template tag with the {{ITEMPARENTTITLE}}.
  • Make sure your child descriptions are generic since the description will be pulled randomly from one of the children. Currently, there is no way to use the parent description on the description template.

2. Assign the new description template to your eBay Feed.

  1. Go to Marketplaces > eBay > Settings.
  2. Click Edit in the Actions column next to the applicable eBay account.

  3. Choose the description template you created in step 1 from the Description Template dropdown.
  4. Click the Save and Exit button in the upper right corner.

3. Determine how to list your variant items on eBay.

  • You have two options:
    1. Enabling variation listings at the account level. It will then apply to all items in a parent-child-relationship, no matter what eBay feed they will be assigned to. Proceed to step 4 if you choose this option.
    2. Enabling variation listings at the feed template level. It will then only apply to items in a parent-child-relationship, that have the label assigned that is associated with this specific feed. Proceed to step 5 if you choose this option.

4. Go to Marketplaces > eBay > Settings to enable variation listings at account level.

  1. Go to Key Settings and click on the Edit icon next to Listings.

  2. In the Variation Listings section, mark the checkbox next to Enable eBay Variation Listings for all templates.
    • Check Enable Automatic Item Specifics creation for variations that are defined in inventory but are not in the default item specifics list from eBay if both eBay item specifics AND any of your own custom attributes should be used for variation listings.

  3. Click the Save button at the bottom of the page. Variation listings should appear on eBay shortly.

5. Go to Marketplaces > eBay > Product Mapping > Templates to enable variation listings at feed level.

  1. Click Edit in the Feed Template column for the applicable eBay account.

  2. Navigate to Item Information and then again Item Information section.
  3. Click on Select next to the Attribute Enable Variation Listings for items using this Template.
NOTE: This field will be displayed only if you haven't enabled Variation Listings at the account level.

  4. The easiest option is to use the Text option for mapping. Expand the dropdown and choose Yes. To confirm your mapping, click on the button Done.

  5. You'll see the mapped value Yes in the Template. Click the Save button in the upper right-hand corner to save your updated template.

6. Map item specifics.

  • Click on the category specific section in your template in the left-hand navigation, for example Clothing, Shoes & Accessories. Item specifics that can vary between items are labelled as (Allowed to vary in all subcategories).

  • Click on Save and Exit in the upper right of the template when you completed your editing.

7. List your products by assigning a label.

  • Finally, specify which items to add your eBay Feed and eventually listed. Assign the label that is assigned in your eBay Feed Settings to the SKUs you want to list. You can do this via an inventory upload or manually in the user interface. Your variation listings will appear shortly on eBay.

  • If you don't see your variation listing on eBay within a reasonable time, it's possible that listing errors occured. Go to Marketplaces > eBay > Performance > Listing Errors to investigate on any errors. The SSC page Understanding Common eBay Variation Listing Error Messages provides details on the most common errors relating to variation listings.
