What You'll Need

Variation listings allow you to provide all of the similar items in a single eBay Fixed Price listing to make it easier for the buyer to find the size, color, or other option that they would like to purchase.

In this guide, we'll explain how to list variations with posting templates using the new template editor. If you want to use eBay Business Policies the new template editor is mandatory.

Note: Not all eBay categories support variation listings. Please see eBay for additional details . If an eBay category is not enabled for variation listings, your products will appear as individual listings.

1. Create a description template for use with your variation listings.

Note: Refrain from including any child-related information in your template.   The description template portion of your listing is static and does not update based on the child item selected in the drop-down menu on eBay.

Complete the following steps:

  • Go to Marketplaces > eBay > Product Mapping > Description Templates.
  • Make a copy of your current description template.
  • To avoid confusing your buyers, remove any template tags that pull in data from your child items, especially {{SIZE}} or {{COLOR}}.
  • Replace your {{ITEMTITLE}} template tag with the {{ITEMPARENTTITLE}} template tag to display the parent title that describes all children associated with that listing.
  • Make sure that your child descriptions are generic since the description will be pulled randomly from one of the children. Currently it is not possible to use the parent description on the description template.

2. Determine how to list your variant items on eBay.

  • You have two options:
    1. Enabling variation listings at the account level. It will then apply to all items in a parent-child-relationship, no matter what posting template they are assigned to. Proceed to step 3 if you choose this option.
    2. Enabling variation listings at the posting template level. It will then only apply to items in a parent-child-relationship, that will be listed with a specific posting template, ad and schedule. Proceed to step 4 if you choose this option.

3. Go to Marketplaces > eBay > Settings to enable variation listings at account level.

  1. Go to Listings and click on the edit (pencil) icon next to it.

  2. In the Variation Listings section, mark the checkbox next to Enable eBay Variation Listings for all templates.
    • Check Enable Automatic Item Specifics creation for variations that are defined in inventory but are not in the default item specifics list from eBay if both eBay item specifics AND any of your own custom attributes should be used for variation listings.

  3. Click the Save button at the bottom of the page. Proceed to step 7.

4. Activate categories you want to list to on eBay (only when using generic posting templates)

When you use generic templates that haven't been created for a specific category you won't see any category related item specifics in the template editor. By activating categories in your settings, these item specifics will be displayed and you can map the varying specifics directly in the template.

  1. Go to Marketplaces > eBay > Settings and click on the edit icon next to Categories.

  2. Mark the check boxes next to the applicable categories and save your selection.

5. Go to Marketplaces > eBay > Product Mapping > Posting Templates to enable variation listings at posting template level.

  1. Click on [Site Details] next to the applicable template. Make sure it's an  eBay Fixed Price template.

  2. Click on Select next to Enable Variation Listings for items using this Template.
NOTE: This field will only be displayed if you haven't enabled Variation Listings at account level.

  3. The easiest option is to use the Text option for mapping. Expand the dropdown and choose Yes. To confirm your mapping, click Done.

  4. You'll see the mapped value Yes in the Template. Click Save.

6. Map item specifics.

  • Click on the category specific section in your template in the left-hand navigation, for example: Clothing, Shoes & Accessories. Item specifics that can vary between items are labelled as (Allowed to vary in all subcategories).

  • Click on Save and Exit in the upper right of the template when you completed your editing.

7. List your variation items.

Finally, create eBay ads for all variation items that should be part of a variation listing. You don't need to create eBay ads for parent items – ChannelAdvisor will suppress this automatically. In those ads, you combine the posting template you created or edited in step 5, the description template and a schedule. You can use any existing schedule and don't need to adjust it for variation listings. If you use a generic posting template, you also designate a category for your ads.

  1. Go to Marketplaces > eBay > Product Mapping > Ads. Click on the link Create New... and choose the option Ads from Inventory.

  2. Select the products you want to create eBay ads for and click on Create Ads.

  3. Complete the form: choose a Posting Template, Description Template, a Category and a Schedule. Click Save and Exit. The schedule will start processing your data at the specified date and time and will send all variation products together.

  4. If you don't see your variation listing on eBay within a reasonable time it's possible that listing errors occurred. Go to Marketplaces > eBay > Performance > Listing Errors to investigate on any errors. The SSC page Understanding Common eBay Variation Listing Error Messages provides details on the most common errors relating to variation listings.

You can also use existing eBay Ads. You simply need to make sure that they use the posting template enabled for variation listings and the correct description template. To replace templates do the following:

  1. Go to Marketplaces > eBay > Product Mapping > Ads.
  2. Select the ads you want to update.
  3. Expand the More button and choose either Description Template or Posting Template.
  4. Mark the applicable option. If the posting template is generic. click Save and Continue and choose a category on the next page. When done, click Save and Exit.
